Using SMART Feedback for Psychological Safety

Written by Megapay | Sep 12, 2023 3:38:01 PM

In today's rapidly changing world, fostering a psychologically safe environment in the workplace
has become paramount. It is not just a buzzword; it is a critical element for success.

Organizations that prioritize psychological safety are better equipped to unleash the full potential
of their teams, drive innovation, productivity, and employee well-being.

One example of ensuring psychological safety is providing constructive feedback with a specific
method called “SMART feedback”.

What is SMART feedback?

S: Specific Behavior
Describe the incorrect behavior very specifically.
Example: Employee clocked out early 3 times during the month of April.

M: Measurable
State your desire clearly.
Example: “Please avoid clocking out early unless the request was pre-approved by the manager.”

A: Attainable
Is this attainable by the employee?
Example: The early clock-outs have been due to the employee struggling to find adequate childcare.

R: Realistic
Will the employee take action?
Example: Ask the employee: On a scale of 1-10, how do you rate your ability to implement the desired behavior?

T: Timely
When will this be reviewed again?
Example: Establish a review date with the employee to meet again.

What to remember:

Creating a psychologically safe environment is an ongoing process that requires
commitment and effort from everyone in the organization. By fostering an atmosphere of trust,
empathy, and open communication, you can unlock the full potential of your team and create a
workplace where innovation and growth thrive.
